An IAN Group & Sound N Vision Production \nOriginally written by joshua teehee for the fresno bee\nIt’s festival announcement time; that point in the year when the spring and summer musical festivals begin unveiling their lineups. \nWe’ve seen announcements from Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and BottleRock Napa Valley. \nNow\, we get the low-down on who’s playing this year’s Grizzly Fest\, which is once again taking Woodward Park for a two-day run\, May 4 and 5. \nThe lineup is what we’ve come to expect from the festival: a well-curated mix that’s heavy on hip-hop\, indie-rock and reggae. Here’s a breakdown by day. \n Saturday\, May 4 \nDay one is headlined by the alt-rock band Portugal. The Man\, with a second tier that includes Schoolboy Q (a friend and collaborator of the late Mac Miller) and Ziggy Marley. \nDown the bill we get more hip-hop\, from Chicago rapper Saba; electro-pop from Shaed out of Washington\, D.C.\, and the Christian songwriter Hollyn. \nWe also get the most stacked local bill we’ve seen in a long time: Planet Asia\, Patrick Contreras\, Cloudship\, Sagey\, Macondo and Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries. \nThere’s also an extensive DJ list that includes Bawmbeats and Andi Mac. Sunday\, \nMay 5 \nG-Eazy headlines day two of the festival\, which seems like a solid choice given the Oakland rapper sold out the Selland Arena back in 2016 and has only become more popular since. He’s joined by the indie pop band Young the Giant and the electronic duo Matt and Kim. \nThe down ticket for day two includes the Drake-endorsed singer Jessie Reyez\, the reggae beat-box rapper Matisyahu\, plus Marc E Bassey\, Leven Kali and Tropa Magica (whom some will remember from Grizzly Fest 2017\, when they played under the name Thee Commons). \nBecause it’s Grizzly Fest\, we’ll get a special set from Fashawn (and Exile). He’s celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Boy Meets World\,” and will perform the album front to back. \nSunday’s lineup of locals includes Wee Beasties\, La Marcha (doing a Selena tribute for Cinco De Mayo) and 40 Watt Hype\, plus Paisa God and Kenneth Paige. \nThe full lineup and ticket information can be found at grizzlyfestival.com. If you don’t have tickets yet\, you’ve missed the early-bird prices\, sadly. \nRead more at: https://www.fresnobee.com/entertainment/ent-columns-blogs/fresno-beehive/article225215435.html#storylink=cpy \nPoster designed by Zoombie Laurel (https://zoombienation.com/) & Juan Verduzco (https://juanverduzco.com)

An IAN Group & Sound N Vision Production \nOriginally written by joshua teehee for the fresno bee\nGrizzly Fest released the lineup for the 2018 festival Monday morning. There’s plenty to get excited about. \nUp top\, there’s Snoop Dogg\, which should appease fans who had been looking forward to seeing him at Save Mart Center opening for Linkin Park (the latter’s national tour was canceled after the death of lead singer Chester Bennington). The West Coast rap icon headlines the annual music festival\, which is scheduled for May 18-19 at Fresno’s Woodward Park. \nNote that the festival has expanded to two days – Friday and Saturday night – and moves to northeast Fresno. It has been at Chukchansi Park each of the last two years. Early bird VIP and two-day tickets are available online at 10 a.m. Tuesday and will run through Christmas. EZ Pay installment plans are available. Ticketing will include RFID wristband technology – the same kind you’d see at Coachella. \nThe expansion to two days is needed to accommodate the lineup of talent. Gone are the reggae vibes Grizzly Fest cultivated with its headliners in years past – though Dirty Heads and Soja are still there for the reggae fans. Instead we get hip-hop and indie-rock heavy hitters. Following Snoop Dogg high in the lineup is Nas (who will finally join his Fresno tie-in Fashawn for a local show)\, plus Foster the People and Phantogram. \nThere also are buzz-worthy acts like Action Bronson\, Chicano Batman (just off a sold-out show at Strummer’s last month)\, Washed Out\, Cults and the return of Thee Commons. The Cumbia punkers had a stand-out performance at last year’s Grizzly Fest. \nThe local scene is well represented\, with Strange Vine\, Hayashi (both Grizzly Fest alums)\, plus Gospel Whiskey Runners\, Sharks of Dance and Zee Will. \nThe change of venue may seem odd\, or at least ill timed. There’s been a good amount of attention paid to downtown Fresno of late\, and having a high-profile\, well attended event of this sort would go a long way in keeping with the atmosphere the area is trying to cultivate. It was mostly an operational decision\, says Aren Hekemian\, with the IAN Group\, which organizes the festival. Grizzly Fest happens in the spring\, in the middle of Fresno Grizzlies season. Having thousands of fans on the field (not to mention two stages and sound) makes it difficult (and expensive) to transition back into a ball park. “There was no way to expand\, unless it was in the off season.” And this year’s festival is expanded\, both in terms of the lineup and its non-musical offerings. There’s a ferris wheel on the flier for a reason. Besides\, music festivals of the sort Grizzly Fest wants to become – Lollapalooza or Outside Lands – typically take place in parks\, Hekemian says. \n“Every major festival is in every city’s major park.” \nPoster design by Juan Verduzco (https://juanverduzco.com)

The funky\, rootsy reggae band’s second album was selling. It was all over the iTunes chart. It topped the reggae music chart and peaked at the number three position as most downloaded album that year. “Bright Side” hit the number 34 spot on the Billboard album chart. \nDespite the inquiries from the corporate rock world\, Rebelution decided to stay independent. \n“The last thing we would want would be for somebody to come in and change what made us Rebelution in the first place\,” drummer Wesley Finley said. “We’re successful for pursuing our sound wholeheartedly and we wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s not to say that we aren’t open to collaborating with other artists and producers so long as we share the same vision of the musical result.” \nHowever\, Rebelution\, which will headline Grizzly Fest in Fresno this weekend\, held on to creative control and it’s worked as the band has reached another echelon. \n“We love playing live\,” Finley said. “Our singer Eric (Rachmanny) has been known to call audibles onstage. Sometimes we’ll extend a jam and dub it out\, and other times Eric will start singing lyrics borrowed from other songs. When that happens\, the rest of us will look at each other and just smile as if saying\, ‘Hold on\, here we go!’” \nRebelution\, which also includes bassist Marley D. Williams and keyboardist Rory Carey\, has four albums to draw from when it makes up its setlist. \n“It’s a good situation to be in\,” Finley said. “We never knew it was going to work out this way. We couldn’t predict which way this would go when we formed (in 2004). We’re from different coastal California cities with different musical backgrounds\, so we have varying taste and ideas\, so our sound became a hodgepodge. But it became something that is fresh and unique. You don’t see that a lot today since a lot of bands just take from another but we’re about doing our own thing and the great thing is that it’s working.” \nFresno’s annual Grizzly Fest\, a celebration of all things musical in the Valley\, finally arrives this weekend. \nThe all-day music fest\, located at Chukchansi Park\, will provide a mellow wave of indie rock\, reggae\, hip hop and more Saturday. \nRebelution will headline\, playing from 11:15 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning. \nPoster design by Juan Verduzco (https://juanverduzco.com)
